1.      Introduction
Language is always changing. We've seen that language changes across space and across social group. Language also varies diagonally time. Generation by generation, pronunciations develop, new words are borrowed or invented, the meaning of old words goes with the flow, and morphology develops or decays. The rate of change varies, but whether the modifications are faster or slower, they build up until the "mother tongue" becomes arbitrarily remote and dissimilar. After a thousand years, the original and new languages will not be mutually intelligible. After ten thousand years, the relationship will be essentially impossible to tell apart from chance relationships between historically unrelated languages.
In isolated subpopulations speaking the same language, most changes will not be shared. As an effect, such subgroups will drift apart linguistically, and eventually will not be able to understand one another.
The present study is going to focus on the variation taken place between “Urdu-e-Mualla” spoken almost two centuries ago and the Urdu of present time. Morphological, syntactical and conceptual changes are being observed.
1.1 Objectives
The objectives of the study are;
1.      To analyse the similarities and differences in the Urdu of the present time and that of two centuries before.
2.      To evaluate the reason of these changes.
1.2 Significance of the Study
The study is significant for it is evaluating the distinctive features, the language spoken in different eras possess and will also describe the possible reason for these changes.
2.      Analysis
There is one original letter written in the era of almost 1850s while the second has been transformed into new version of 2015. The original version has been attached as Appendix A while the new version has been attached as Appendix B. Analysis has been done below.
2.1 Use of Epithet
Epithet is a stylistic device emphasizing some quality of a person, thing, idea or phenomenon. Its function is to reveal the evaluating subjective attitude of the writer towards the thing described. It can also be named as adjective because its purpose is to highlight the qualities, the particular thing or person is possessing. In the given letter which is written in Urdu-e-Mualla, the writer has used epithets which are no more used in the language of now a day unless it is necessary.
عطوفت نامہ”, “صاحب فراش”, “صورت پر کدورت”, “اور پاؤ بھر کا مرہم”,. Such uses have been abandoned in the language used in these days. Atoofat nama is mere called a letter and صورت پر کدورتis only “بری حالت  “ and even there in no use for such uses.
2.2 Hyperbole
Hyperbole is a figure of speech, in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect; an extravagant statement. In the given letter, its use has been made more than frequently while in the contemporary world, this type of statements are used but not frequently especially in everyday conversation.
These hyperboles have been used in common conversation that is with a friend. In the world of today, this vogue has been transformed into quite simple chatting. People may use to exaggerate their condition, not to that much account.
مختصر یہ کہ سر سے پاؤں تک بارہ پھوڑے۔ ہر پھوڑا ایک زخم۔ ہر زخم ایک غار۔ ہر روز بلا مبالغہ بارہ تیرہ پٹیاں اور پاؤ بھر کا مرہم چاہیے ہوتا تھا۔ ۔
Periphrasis is a stylistic device and also a metaphorical language that consists in the renaming of an object by a phrase that brings out some particular feature of it. Rendering a purely individual perception of the object the device can be decipherable only in context. The letter writer has used periphrasis i.e. “عطوفت نامہ ” for letter and “اختراق کا مرض” for cancer which he was suffering from and it is used as “کہ جلا دینے والے بیماری

2.4 Post modifiers
As rhetorical devices, post modifiers as adjectives i.e.
سال گذشتہ”, “صاحب فراش”,  صورت مرگ نیم مردہ”,
have been used. This type of modifiers is still used but not frequently. As now nobody will say “shab-e-dard or shab-e-tanha” rather would say a “disturbed night” or a “sleepless night” or بغیر سوئے گزرے . The reason is again fusion of foreign languages or languages.
2.5 Syntax
مختصر یہ کہ سر سے پاؤں تک بارہ پھوڑے۔ ہر پھوڑا ایک زخم۔ ہر زخم ایک غار۔ ہر روز بلا مبالغہ بارہ تیرہ پٹیاں اور پاؤ بھر کا مرہم چاہیے ہوتا تھا۔ ۔
Use of complex sentences is visible; mostly it is having clauses. The post modifiers are adding to the beauty of the structure and are giving poetic effect, e.g.
آج دو شنبہ ۶ رمضان کی اور ۱۵ فروری کی ہے۔ اس وقت بارہ پر تین بجے ہیں                                                                  The way of telling time is quite different, “abe bara per teen bajey han” means its quarter past twelve. How much change even has occurred in the way of telling time, now even someobe telling time in urdu will never say the same words as said by the writer, rather one would prefer to say quarter past twelve or “۔ اس ووقت سوا بارہ بجے ہیں”.
2.6 Metaphors
۔ حواس کھو بیٹھا ہوں حافظہ کو رو بیٹھا ہوں۔ تو اتنی دیر میں اٹھا ہوں کہ جتنی دیر میں قد آدم دیوار اٹھائے
e.t.c. thus certain metaphors have been used which are no more used frequently. To enhance the concept of difficulty the writer is facing, he has used these metaphors. Metaphors are still being used but not in this way. The صورت پر کدورت”,” may be called in an informal way “an ugly face” and the concept of laziness can be associated with sloth or mole e.t.c.
2.7 Formal and Informal style
The given letter was written almost two centuries before, and another trend that has changed is the style of letter writing:
آپ کی پرسش کے کیوں نہ قربان جاؤں کہ جب تک میرا نام نہ سنا میری خبر نہ لی۔ میرے مرگ کے مخبر کی تقریر اور مثل میری تحریر، آدھا سچ اور آدھا جھوٹ، در صورت مرگ نیم مردہ اور درد حالاتِ حیات نیم زندہ ہوں۔
The language specified for letters in present era is mostly informal and it allows language of informal letters to be casual and easy. The reason for this is that it should be comprehensible for the reader of the letter as the person may belong to another community and can be likely to face hurdle in comprehending the language. Below the modified example is being given:
The sentence written above is an example of euphemistic periphrases, which is a social practice of replacing words with those that seem less straightforward, milder, more harmless or at least less offensive is called euphemistic periphrases. Such uses are still common but with a lot of changes. It was a custom of the language used almost two centuries before, but now the tendency for such uses has been changed and the words are used thus:
۔ میری موت کی خبر دینے والے کی تحریر اور میرے خط کی تاریخ ملتے جلتے ہیں دونوں ہی آدھے سچ اور آدھے جھوٹ پر مبنی ہیں، بس کیا کہوں کہ آدھا زندہ اور آدھا مردہ ہوں
2.9 Style of time and date
Old version comprises the following sort of writing date and time. The use of Persian words is also visible here like “shamba” and “do shamba
۔ عطوفت نامہ پہنچا۔ ادھر پڑھا ، ادھر جواب لکھا۔ آج دو شنبہ ۶ رمضان کی اور ۱۵ فروری کی ہے۔ اس وقت بارہ
پر تین بجے ہیں
The new version is changed to a larger extent with regard to applying words in date and time:
آج اتوار ۶رمضان اور ۱۵ فروری ہے۔ اس ووقت سوا بارہ بجے ہیں
2.10 Rhythmic style and rhyming words
The old version contains words such as,
““صورت پر کدورت”, “۔ اب اگرچہ تندرست ہوں لیکن ناتواں و سست ہوں۔ حواس کھو بیٹھا ہوں حافظہ کو رو بیٹھا ہوں.    Rhythmic style and rhyming words have been used to embellish the writing and to give rhythmic effect to it but in the version of the present time such instances are rarely found and if somebody finds them, these may be only to exaggerate a concept or for sarcasm. The same text, in new version is like this:
۔ اب اگرچہ تندرست ہوں لیکن بہت ہی سستی محسوس کرتا ہوں۔ حواس ٹھیک نہیں رہتے اور حافظہ بھی کام نہیں کرتا
3.      Conclusion
The change between the two languages is quite obvious. The sure reason for this change is that, language transforms as it is transmitted from one generation to the next. Each individual re-creates a grammar and lexicon based on input received from parents, older siblings and other members of the speech community. The experience of each individual varies, and the course of linguistic replication is imperfect, thus the result is variable across individuals. The same result affects the communities as the interaction takes place as the communities grow.
When a language passes through changing process and it is codified, it has a long lasting impact on the generations. This process goes on generation after generation until a changed version takes place. The same sort of change is obvious in the two letters written above and a more changed version is also expected in the years to come.
قید حیات و بند غم ، اصل میں دونوں ایک ہیں
موت سے پہلے آدمی غم سے نجات پائے کیوں؟
Translation in English
Same and one are the prison of life and the bondage of grief
Before the onset of death, how one can expect to be free?
Thus these variations are bound to changes and they develop with the progress of man and no one can avoid them.
