Chilisso: An endangered language

Chilisso

Other names: Chiliss, Galos, Dardu, Chilso.

Classification: The classification of this language has been done in Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Northwestern Zone.

Language family: Dardic, Kohistani

This language is threatened with 40% certainty based on the evidence available.

According to information collected till 1992 the number of native speakers worldwide was 2,000-3,000.

It is at level 2 in speaker number trends. A majority of community members speak Chilisso but speaker number is gradually decreasing.


It is “under great pressure by Shina. According to Hallberg,’a point which further underscores he idea that language shift is taking place in this community is the fact that of the 13 individuals who were asked, 4 said that they spoke Chalisso in their homes as a child but speak Shina in their homes now.’ (Hallberg in SSNPV Vol.1, 1992: 122-123).”

Shina is the other language spoken by the community in Pakistan.

Location description for Chalisso is Koli, Palas, Jalkot Indus Kohistan.

No dialects known but has lexical similarities with Indus Kohistani (70%), Gowro (65%-68%), Bateri (54%), Kohistani Shina (48%-56%), Torwali (26%), Kalami (25%).
